In the process of human civilization, some history is too cruel to look directly at, but it is because of its cruelty that we need to face it and remember it more to prevent repeating the same mistakes. 1967 occurred in the Lingling area of Hunan (now Yongzhou City) In particular, the “Dao County Incident” in Daoxian County is such a painful memory.
What is the “Dao County Incident”?
The Daoxian incident refers to a appalling large-scale abnormal death incident between August 13 and October 17, 1967, during the Cultural Revolution, in the Hunan Provincial Daoxian County and its surrounding counties and cities. In just 66 days, thousands of innocent lives were involved in a frenzy political slaughter.
Numbers that should never be forgotten
According to the final investigation of the official 1980s (Work Group on the Legacy of the Cultural Revolution to deal with the legacy of the Cultural Revolution), the disaster left icy and cruel data:
- Total deaths: Abnormal deaths in the whole region 9,093 people(7,696 of them were killed and 1,397 were forced to commit suicide). Only one county in Daoxian County, the death toll reaches 4,519 people.

How did the tragedy happen?
Looking back at this history, this massacre is not an occasional public security incident, but an out-of-control organization after the flood of anarchism and the complete smashing of the legal system:
- Two factions and rumors are scattered: In the summer of 1967, the local “Red Union” and “Gelian” mass organizations in Daoxian County broke out in fierce fighting due to the battle for weapons. In the extremely tense opposition atmosphere, the grassroots began to spread the political rumors that “four types of elements should organize the ‘black killing team” to rebel and blood to the poor and lower middle peasants".

The end of history and reflection
It was not until mid-October 1967 that the 47th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and other troops entered the scene and issued a notice to strictly stop the killing. This two-month madness was forcibly ended.
After the Cultural Revolution, during the period of the Cultural Revolution (1980s), the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Hunan Provincial Party Committee conducted an investigation and rehabilitation of the Daoxian incident, and gave certain pensions to the families of the deceased.
